The temperatures here in Kansas have recently been flirting with sweater weather season. Along with crisp mornings, crunchy leaves, and cozy cups of pumpkin spice, it also means that cold and flu season is just around the corner. Every year, before the first sniffle makes its debut, I like to stock up on my favorite natural remedies and comfort staples. Having everything on hand saves me from last-minute pharmacy runs and makes me feel prepared to care for my family in an empowered, holistic way.
I like to think of this process as building a little wellness apothecary right in my own home - part prevention, part comfort, and part “mama’s magic.” So, while I'm currently preparing to stock up on my essentials, I thought I would share what’s in my winter medicine cabinet this year.
Note: At the bottom of this post I've created a free resource for you to download, complete with shopping lists and links to find some of my favorite winter essentials.

Everyday Readiness
When I know I’ll be traveling, spending time in large crowds, or just feel like my immune system could use extra support, I like to boost up my core supplements. These are my go-tos for a strong, steady foundation:
Vitamin D3 – Helps keep immunity strong, especially during the darker months.
Vitamin C (Liposomal when possible) – A staple for immune defense and faster recovery; the liposomal form is extra absorbable.
Zinc – Supports healing and shortens the duration of colds.
On Guard Chewable Tablets – A "one-and-done" simple solution; formulated with vitamin C, vitamin D, Zinc and the doTERRA On Guard Protective Blend.
Earthley Elderberry Elixir – Daily immune support, packed with antioxidants and great for prevention.
Probiotics – Because gut health and immune health go hand-in-hand.
Immune Support Must-Haves
When I start to notice the first signs of a scratchy throat, sniffle, or that run-down feeling, these are the remedies I reach for right away. They’re my front-line support to help shorten the duration of sickness and give my body the boost it needs.
I don’t use all of these products every time I get sick. Instead, I approach it intuitively, choosing the top remedies that feel like the best fit in the moment. Sometimes I even muscle test each item to see what my body is asking for. Everyone’s needs are different, so it’s less about using everything and more about finding the right support for you in that season.
dōTERRA On Guard Essential Oil Blend – Immune-boosting powerhouse for diffusing or applying topically.
On Guard Softgels – Convenient for extra immune support when we need it.
Earthley Feel Better Fast – A go-to tincture when sickness starts creeping in.
Biron ColdCalm – Homeopathic meltaway tablets for runny noses and colds.
Oscillococcinum Tablets – A homeopathic option I keep on hand for flu-like symptoms.
BioRay NDF Kids Immune – Helps clear out everyday toxins while giving the immune system a gentle boost; safe for kids and supportive for adults too.
Medicinal Mushrooms (Reishi, Chaga, Turkey Tail, etc.) – For immune resilience and recovery; I like ImmuneShroom from Organic Olivia.
Quercetin – A natural antioxidant that pairs beautifully with Vitamin C for immune health.
Respiratory + chest Relief
When coughing or chest tightness show up, I turn to these remedies to help open my airways and bring soothing relief. They’re especially supportive for calming irritation and making it easier to breathe and rest.
Organic Olivia Chest Comfort Syrup – Herbal support for stubborn coughs and chest congestion.
dōTERRA Breathe Essential Oil Blend – An oil blend designed to open airways by diffusing in the home or applying topically over the chest.
dōTERRA Breathe Vapor Stick – Already diluted, I like to rub this mess-free stick on my children's chests for quick relief.
Breathe Respiratory Drops – A natural, essential oil–based option for soothing airways.
Earthley Cough-B-Gone – Helps calm coughs naturally.
N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) – Supports respiratory health and loosens mucus.
Natural Honey Throat & Cough Drops – Click here for my easy recipe that uses essential oils and honey.
Sinus + Nasal Support
For stubborn congestion, sinus pressure, or allergy flare-ups, I rely on these remedies to help clear nasal passages and support healthy sinus function. They make it easier to breathe freely and feel more comfortable while my body recovers.
Earthley Sinus Saver – Gentle, herbal support for sinus discomfort.
Sinus Calm Meltaway Tablets – Natural relief for sinus pressure and allergy-related congestion.
Neti Pot and Sinus Rinse Packets – A simple but powerful tool for flushing out nasal congestion.
Colloidal Silver Nose Spray – Helps keep sinuses clear and supports respiratory health.
Xlear Nasal Spray – Moisturizes nasal passages while flushing out irritants: I always try to keep both the "rescue" and "max" versions on hand.
Metagenics Sinuplex – Nutrient support specifically for sinus health.
Sinus Steam – A bowl (or mug) of steaming hot water and essential oils is the perfect remedy for stubborn sinuses. Try one of my do-it-yourself recipes.
Throat Soothers
When my throat feels sore, or irritated, these remedies are my go-to for gentle, soothing relief.
Throat Spray – Soothing for sore throats and scratchy coughs; both Earthley and Organic Olivia make these.
Throat Calm Meltaway Tablets – Homeopathic support for sore throats.
Organic Throat Coat Tea – A classic, soothing herbal tea that feels amazing on sore throats.
On Guard Throat Drops – My favorite for scratchy throats while traveling.
Pain + Body Temp.
For body aches, chills, or low-grade fevers, I turn to these remedies to ease discomfort and support my body’s natural healing.
Homeopathic Arnica – For body aches, fever, and overall malaise.
Peppermint Essential Oil – For cooling fevers and easing headaches.
dōTERRA Deep Blue Stick + Copaiba – My favorite for body aches and sore muscles that often come with being under the weather.
Recovery Teas
Herbal teas are my go-to comfort and wellness ritual—soothing, warming, and supportive for the immune system, throat, and overall well-being during cold and flu season.
Herbal Tea Ingredients – My “feel better tea” recipe includes star anise, cinnamon, clove, and honey. Warming, soothing, and supportive.
Echinacea Tea – Gentle immune support and helps the body respond quickly to seasonal bugs.
Elder Tea – Is rich in antioxidants and feels so soothing during the winter months.
Organic Olivia The Guardian Tea Blend – A cozy blend of herbs that support both the immune system and overall wellness.
Organic Throat Coat Tea – A classic, soothing herbal tea that feels amazing on sore throats.
Lemon Ginger Cayenne Tea – My recipe is a great alternative when you're all out of tea.
Comfort Remedies
Sometimes the simplest ingredients are the most powerful. Fresh garlic, ginger, lemons, and other kitchen staples are easy to grab at the local grocery store and can be used to support immunity, soothe symptoms, and add natural healing to your meals and drinks.
Manuka Honey – A natural antimicrobial and throat soother. I stir it into tea or take a spoonful when I feel a tickle in my throat.
Electrolytes – Important for hydration and recovery, especially with fever or stomach bugs.
Castor Oil Pack – Supports lymphatic drainage and gentle detox while healing.
Fresh Ginger + Garlic – Both are natural antimicrobials; I love adding them to broths or tea.
Bone Broth – Nourishing, easy on the stomach, and full of minerals.
Lemons – A squeeze in hot water or tea is soothing and vitamin C–rich.
Raw Apple Cider Vinegar – A staple for immune-boosting tonics and warm drinks with honey.
Turmeric + Black Pepper – A warming, anti-inflammatory duo for soups or golden milk.
Fire Cider – Spicy, warming tonic that supports immunity and circulation.
Hot Honey – Try my homemade recipe.
Epsom Salts – Perfect for relaxing baths that ease body aches and support detox.
Air and Water Quality Support
Clean air and water are the foundation of wellness, especially during cold and flu season. These tools help reduce irritants, allergens, and pathogens in your environment, making it easier for your body to stay healthy and recover.
Essential Oil Diffuser – A must-have for purifying the air and setting a healing environment.
Humidifier – Keeps the air moist, eases congestion, and supports easier breathing.
Air Doctor Purifier – Helps keep our indoor air fresh and clean, which is especially important in the winter when windows are closed.
Air Doctor Filters – I always make sure we’re stocked up on replacements so the purifier works at its best.
Water Distiller – Water that is pure and free from contaminants supports overall health and helps our bodies stay resilient. Personally, we have invested in a water distiller from Pure Water in addition to a reverse osmosis water filter under our kitchen sink.
Extra Tools I Keep Around
Hydrogen Peroxide Ear Drops (diluted) – Handy for earaches or at the very first signs of flu.
Nebulizer with Saline – For deeper respiratory support when congestion lingers.
Blue Light–Blocking Glasses – Support restful sleep and melatonin production while healing.
Extra Cozy Blankets – Sometimes comfort is medicine.
Heating Pad – Comforting for chills and sore muscles.
Soft Tissues with Aloe – A little luxury when noses are sore from constant blowing.
Red Infrared Light – A wellness tool for circulation, healing, and immune strength.
Final Thoughts
Having these natural remedies and comfort items ready to go means I don’t have to scramble when the first sniffle shows up. It gives me peace of mind to know that I can support my family with gentle, effective tools that really work for us.
If this list feels a little overwhelming, don’t worry. I didn’t build my winter medicine cabinet overnight. It’s taken me years of slowly adding one or two new remedies at a time, finding what really works for my family, and letting go of what doesn’t. Think of it as a gentle process of building your own wellness toolkit. Start with a few basics that resonate with you, and over time, you’ll naturally grow a collection that feels supportive and aligned with your needs.
I put together a shopping cart at dōTERRA filled with all of my favorite winter wellness essentials. Once you’re there, you can easily add, remove, or swap items to make it your own. When you shop through my dōTERRA link, you’re not only stocking your home with natural wellness tools, you’re also helping support this website and my work (thank you!). You’ll also find all additional shopping links and recommendations listed below in my free winter readiness checklist.
With Love,
Kelsey
