The Sacred Practice of Anointing Oil

Updated: Feb 13, 2023

Anointing oils have been around for centuries. Anointing is a ceremonial practice of applying oil on a person's body or head. It has been practiced in almost all ancient religions including Christianity, Hinduism, and Judaism and was believed to even be common practice during the ancient Egyptian times.

Historically, anointing oil was used to signify a Godly or holy presence. Anointing was a spiritual ritual used for healing. It is believed to protect a person from malicious Spirits, disease, illness, and negative energies.

Anointing is a spiritual practice where you infuse your aromatic oils with blessings and prayers. This enhances the frequency of the oils that you use so that you can use them as a means for healing or spiritual enhancement. Anointing oil is an ancient practice used to purify you and your space by making everything that the oil touches holy. Therefore, anointing oil is a sacred tool that can be used to cleanse your energy, protect your loved ones, and raise the vibration of your home.

Prepare Your Oil

The first thing you want to do when anointing with oil is to collect your choice of carrier oils and essential oils. Traditionally, anointing oil is done with olive oil, but honestly, you can use any carrier oil of your choice. I personally like to use fractionated coconut oil (FCO) in almost all of my oil practices simply because FCO doesn't stain your clothing like olive oil or other fatty oils do. And, the FCO doesn't have an odor, which is nice. To start, you will pour your olive oil or your carrier oil in a small dipping bowl, mixing dish, or glass cruet. I really love these handmade anointing bowls from Etsy. Then if you want, you can add a couple of drops of aromatic oils of your choice to this anointing oil. For anointing oil, I usually choose essential oils with the highest vibration and those that are considered very sacred or holy. You can also choose oils that are specifically used for emotional healing, energy cleansing or sacred protection. I discuss these specific essential oils and herbs for energy healing in my online mastery course, Become the Healer of Your Home.

Intentions

Once you've prepared your oil, you'll want to pray or set intentions over the oil. In this act, you are essentially programming the oil by telling it how it can assist you. Remember, plants are alive. That is, they have a Spirit, an essence. Any Spirit found in nature, be it a crystal, a tree, an herb, or an oil, can be invoked with prayers and intentions to assist you.

You may wish to bless this oil with your hands either by holding your hands over the oil as you pray or gently touching the oil with your fingertips. I like to use my hands to bless my oil because the arms and hands are an extension of the heart chakra. When we use our hands in this way, we're infusing our oils with our love and our pure heart energy. As you pray over your oils, be sure to ask for Divine protection or impermeable protection. You can also ask for healing and any other intentions that you may have for this oil. You will also want to invite the presence of God, your angels, and any other helping spirits, such as your Spirit Guides or Ancestors.

Anoint Yourself

Next, you'll anoint yourself. Anointing is always done with your thumb or your finger. Using your hands, you'll apply a small amount of oil right in the middle of your forehead. Or sometimes people will also anoint the very top of the crown of the head. You can also apply oil over your heart or on the bottoms of your feet. You can apply the anointing oil over any area of your body that you feel pain or sickness or anywhere that you need extra protection or healing. You can do the same thing for your friends, your pets, or your family members by anointing them with the same oil and in the same way. Anointing your loved ones is a very special way to send healing and love to others, especially if they're sick or going through a difficult time. If you're a Christian, you may also like to draw a cross with your fingers while anointing. If you're not comfortable with that, don't worry. You can make any shape you choose, such as a heart or a star, or simply just place a dot of oil on the body.

Anoint Your Home

Finally, you can take your anointing oil and bless your home with it. This is especially helpful when you move into a new space, or you feel like your home needs additional protection. You'll take your anointing oil with you while walking around your home. With your hands you'll apply a small bit of your anointing oil on every door frame of your home. This will infuse your entire space with Divine love and protection.

Again, I like to use FCO because it won't leave a greasy stain on your doorways. If you're using a fatty oil, you may want to apply the oil on the inside of your door frame or somewhere inconspicuous in case staining does occur.

Typically, I only make enough anointing oil for one session, so I'll just make enough to anoint myself and my home. If there's any oil left over, I'll add it to my sacred baths or simply apply it on the rest of my body. But you can also make anointing oil in bulk and simply keep it in a large glass cruet or a mason jar and use it as you need it.

Some people love to work with holy oil on a daily basis, applying it every morning before they leave home or before they go to sleep. Others like to do periodic rituals with their anointing oil, using it occasionally during special occasions or times of need. There's not a wrong way to do this if your intention is clear and pure.
